Exchange 2007 messages going straight to Drafts.
So I had this issue today where all emails that I wrote would be sent to the 'Drafts' folder instead of sending. I was also unable to recieve new emails as well. At first I thought this would be some kind of 'back pressure' issue and ignored it, but when it kept happening and the server still had 50GB of hard drive space left and 1GB of RAM available I figured that something else must be wrong.
Well, it turns out the 'Microsoft Exchange Transport' server stopped (still can't figure out why exactly). So I started it up and everything is fine again.
Just a heads up for anyone with an issue like this where back pressure is not the problem.

I am in an Exchange 2010 class now and mentioned this very thing to the instructor as we have it in our 2007 r2 environment with random users. The interim fix I was using (as I heard this was caused by corrupt mail item in mailbox) was to move the mailbox from one store to another.
Today the intructor told me that if a user sends a very large message -- even one that is over size limit -- it will set off backpressure and trigger mail going to drafts. It is considered "understood behavior" even if backpressure is only kicked off by that one message. For our enviroment, this explanation makes sense as the affected users typically send large files. What happens next is that mail in Outlook client 2007 being sent out goes to the SENT ITEMS folder okay, but in OWA, the message shows up in the DRAFTS folder even though it does send out and can only be deleted manually from OWA.
When a user is looking at hundreds of messages in the drafts folder of OWA, this isn't a fun or feasible task.
Once the mailbox moves from one store to another, sent items no longer go to the drafts folder but the user still has to clean out the existing items. They don't go away with the move.
Instructor also said this "behavior" is fixed in 2010. Since we are moving to 2010 in June 2010, I've decided to live with it til then.
Hope this helps!
